GALAXY update, part 21 or maybe 22, I've lost track.

This is actually just a proposal that hasn’t yet been vetted/okayed by Chief Engineer Turff, but I think it will work.

You will recall that I solved the storage issue of the EL loop stands recently, not only in terms of keeping those 230 pieces of wire from tangling with each other but also in the efficiency with which we will distribute them onsite: the recipe cards for each box (four per zone) have the number of stands needed for that box’s loops, and the bundles of stands are tied with color-coded twill tape, so all the installation team needs to do is to walk along and deposit the appropriate bundle beside the box.

[Getting all this gathered back up and stored neatly and appropriately is a task still to be studied. Cras melior est.]

So too with the bundles of EL loops, although here it’s a little more complicated. I carefully created each of the 28 recipe cards with the exact order of small, medium, and large loops along the spine of the piece, and the EL loops will be bundled with those exact loops (although as a bundle of course they won’t be in the “order” they will need to be). In other words, if I see a recipe card labeled Zone 2 Box 3, I need a bundle that will have three small loops, three mediums, and one large, and I will need to plug them in and arrange them along the line in the order M L S S M M S.

So rather than any old bundle of eight stands, for example, with the EL loops I will need a bundle for Zone 2 Box 3 specifically.

I’ve already gone with a ROY G. BIV structure for the recipe cards, so it makes sense to do the same with the EL bundles.

Each little bundle of twill tape can be cut into eight lengths suitable for tying up bundles. Here are my thoughts in the GALAXY Project WASTE BOOK:

I’m thinking we will need two ties per bundle, one for the loops themselves and one for the plugs, which gives us exactly eight ties per zone. Perfect. My next project then is sewing bits of white twill tape onto each end of each tape and label with the number of the box. In this way we can also trundle along the laid-out spine and drop the correct bundle on the correct box in order, just like the stands.

I even have a way to collect and store the little ties so they don’t get tangled, jumbled, or lost. But we’ll get to that later.

Onward!

In case I have not emphasized this, GALAXY will make its debut on Dec 4 in Greenville St Park here in Newnan as part of Unsilent Night Newnan.
