The other day at Backstreet Arts, a new person wandered through the door and was warmly greeted by one and all. Backstreet founder/goddess Kim went over to her and began the process of assimilation—Resistance is futile—and the nice lady immediately demurred: “I’m not that creative”, she said. A friend had told her about Backstreet and she was checking it out, that was all, she said.

Well.

After Kim finished touring her around the studio, I snagged her and shepherded her back to the writers’ table. I asked her about her lack of creativity, and she again demurred.

I pulled up the opening page of Lichtenbergianism for Kids and asked her to take the quiz. She read it out loud, answering yes to every question and even provided details. When she was done, she laughingly acknowledged that she was, after all, creative. Then she went to start doing that thing, so I won that one.

I came home and printed out a bunch of copies of the quiz to take back to Backstreet so we can use them to break through that wall that many people build around their creative selves after childhood. EVERY HUMAN IS CREATIVE—it’s what makes us human. The trick is be as bold as a child in our ABORTIVE ATTEMPTS.
