A posited project

We spent the weekend at Fernandina Beach, one of our favorite places to go when we can. (If you follow me on Twitter, you may be aware that I narrowly escaped life-altering injury our first night there.)

On our way out of town, my Lovely First Wife and I stopped at a couple of antique/junk shops for funsies. We have a rule now in our declining years that we buy only art or jewelry these days. The general rule is No More Stuff.

In line with the art proviso, I found these bookends at one of the places we stopped:

I do not need bookends. (Pro tip: If you cram your shelves with books, you don’t need bookends.) But they resonated with me because I immediately saw them as having potential for some kind of lighting fixture in the labyrinth.

And then they hooked up with a yet-to-be-realized project: the water feature/fountain which the LFW has desired for the patio area for quite a while.

Yes, I could probably buy one of those trickly things you find at The Home Depot or Lowe’s or At Home, but where’s the fun in that? Hardly any TASK AVOIDANCE at all. No, I’m thinking I will buy a fountain pump kit, pour my own concrete slabs, assemble them, rig the water flow, etc. That should take only a couple more years.

These lovely pieces of glass generated a new idea for the fountain: embed them in the front block of concrete, and contrive to have them lit from behind:

The phone camera cannot capture the delicate interplay of light.

The phone camera cannot capture the delicate interplay of light.

So this is not hard is it, to learn how to create a concrete water feature from scratch that not only plashes water but also lights up, right?

Cras melior est.
