I confess: I am having too much fun writing/crafting these adventures of our little friend Bug.

After hammering out A Bug’s Lunch, that award-winning, universally-beloved children’s book (as soon as I find a publisher), I found myself making new paths for him.

To wit:

That’s right, dear reader, I am mapping out four new Bug adventures, and they’re going to be as adorable as Lunch. They are:

  • A Bug’s Nap: Bug looks for a place to nap, evaluating the pros and cons of each.

  • A Bug’s Dream: Bug dreams of having wings, being bigger than a mouse, etc.

  • A Bug’s Friend: Bug goes to visit Butterfly; they discuss things they could do together

  • A Bug’s Memory: Bug remembers hatching, the spring, summer, and…

One really fun thing is threading callbacks and references through the books, like the ants always saying “Hi, Bug!” or the way Bug interacts with the book’s dedication.

I’m also envisioning an online parental guide so I can give them tips like, “Yes, you are supposed to turn the book upside down,” or “Ask your child why they picked that place for Bug to nap.”

I think that last page, where Bug invites the reader to finish the story, should be erasable. (One parent to whom I gave a copy of Lunch immediately recognized — and I had not — that his daughter could color the drawings!)
